Review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) by Tom M — 31 Dec 2010
This being a direct continuation of the second Star Trek film is fascinating in many ways. The by-line to this film is the "search for Spock" but Spock died of radiation poisoning back in the second film didn't he? No, his Vulcan spirit lives on and has somehow pervaded McCoy's mind/soul.
Weird. Spock is somehow re-generated, inexplicably divested of the aforesaid radiation poisoning on the Genesis planet, re-grown and revested with his mind/soul from McCoy. Admiral Kirk goes into business for himself and makes off with the Enterprise under Starfleet's nose and is aided and abetted by his former Enterprise crew.
The brilliant Christopher Lloyd is strangely cast as the lead Klingon bad guy. The story requires new depths of suspension of disbelief from its audience but amazingly fails to flinch in the face of a growing number of illogical developments.
Despite all the above this film holds itself together and in terms of entertainment, improves on the first two Star Trek films.
