The exact opposite of the first Trek: emotional instead of stoic, red instead of blue, hot instead of cold, fast instead of slow. Director Nicholas Meyer turned out what can best be called a pirate movie in space: "Khan" is a thrilling, cleverly spun, even touching tale of revenge, regret, and redemption.

William Shatner presents Kirk with a full gamut of emotions, from restlessness to remorse to anger to sheer heartbreak. Ricardo Montalban's Khan is easily one the greatest villains in film history, dominating the frame with both his physical prowess and his speeches while providing the heroes with a true threat.

Spock's sacrifice, of course, seals the movie as the best in the series. Not just great science fiction, but also a terrific action-adventure film.
