Review of Star Trek: Generations (1994) by Corey P — 25 Apr 2008
Star Trek VII...or Generations. This was the first of the Trek films to feature the crew of The Next Generation TV Series. The film does feature a couple old faces from the original crew with appearances by Chekov, Scott, and Kirk.
But Kirk is the only one with a key part in the plot. Acting was actually pretty good in the film, with an especially comedic performance by Brent Spiner that has you rolling on the floor. Especially if you're a Trek fan.
The graphics are actually pretty good, but there is a lot of obvious usage of miniatures in the film. And they are more appearant then this films predecessor, Star Trek VI. The music is decent, but lacks a really stirring theme of its own that you can pick up on over and over.
Unlike II, VI, or VIII, the music lacks its own distinct theme that endears you to the film. The plot was decent, but in reality the film is more of a final tv episode to bridge to hand the baton from the original crew to the next generation.
And lastly...you don't kill a legend. My biggest gripe about this film will always be the death of Kirk. Did he die heroically? Yes...but Kirk was all about cheating the odds to achieve survival. In the end the film is a decent addition to the Trek franchise, but falls short of some of its predecessors and its own offspring.
