Review of Star Trek: Generations (1994) by Cyrus B — 12 May 2008
Pretty thin outing, tying together Classic Trek and The Next Generation and doing justice to neither. A thin plot, closer to fantasy than real science fiction, doesn't hold up over nearly two hours, and only Malcolm McDowell really gets any mileage out of his character--Shatner appears only at the very beginning and the last third, and despite a good effort, Kirk just doesn't fit well into the story.
Patrick Stewart is acceptable, but the script doesn't give him much to work with. The script hints at a number of themes, such as the balance of professional and personal life, but this is not well-developed, and only leaves one unsatisfied.
Worse, Brent Spiner gets some incredibly cringe-worthy moments as Data--leaving one to wonder if someone was asleep at the wheel of this particular enterprise.
