Review of Star Trek: Generations (1994) by David G — 21 Oct 2008

Underwhelming. The crossover between the original series and the Next Generation isn't so much a fanboys dream as a mess! It tries to do so much yet achieves so little and feels like it's all over the place without a solid, central core - the past, the present, alternative timelines, the holodeck, this way, that way.

Then we have the deaths of Picard's brother and nephew, Data's emotion chip, the Klingons, the Nexus, the Enterprise-B... I'm not sure how to explain it, it just feels rushed and incomplete.

Still, it's certainly watchable and has it's moments, such as the saucer crash and the quite moving death of Kirk. It's a shame the same can't be said for the destruction of the Enterprise-D.

It blows up with little fanfare and gets no more recognition than a half-hearted "She was a good ship" from Riker. I felt it deserved more attention, more akin to the sublime death of the original Enterprise in STIII.

Sadly it comes off as a cheap way to get rid of the old ship so they can bring in a fancy new design for the next film. Bah!
