Review of Star Trek: Generations (1994) by Brett K — 08 Jun 2009
Finally saw this one after much anticipation. I am not as big of a fan of TNG as I am TOS, so some of this I wasn't sure how to react to. It certainly isn't a bad movie, with some very important themes and depth which are common to great Star Trek films.
It was almost as smart and well done as Wrath of Kahn, but had just as much nonsense as Search for Spock. The nonsense really kills it though, having a few major plot devices not explained that well. The great part about this movie is that it seems to be a TNG movie, but has Scotty, Checkoff, and of course Captain Kirk.
These are very welcome additions, but why not have everyone? The addition of Kirk is great, but it seemed to rupture the flow of the movie. He, to me, steals the show at the end over Picard and the rest of the TNG crew.
You can have debates until the end of time over who was a better captain because that's debatable. To me, when they are sharing the screen, Kirk is the definitive one of the two in terms of who's more entertaining to watch.
