Review of Star Trek: Generations (1994) by Matthew D — 11 Dec 2009

Well it took me a long time to finally find this DVD but I did and I saw it for the first time in years. This finally completes my Star Trek movie collection (apart from Star Trek 2009 which doesn't count).

This movie was hit by harsh criticism by fans and critics alike but I really don't get why because it is a great addition to the series. Unlike Star Trek in Name Only (2009) this movie followed well what Star Trek was all about.

Star Trek is about good storytelling, likable characters and the pursuit of answers to the big questions about human nature. And this movie has all of that. It isn't just about big explosions and product placements.

This is real Star Trek. This is a good example of how an original series cameo can be done right unlike the horrible Leonard Nimoy cameo in the new one. The villain in this movie is way more interesting than Nero.

And they tackled big questions of the human experience about learning to control emotions (Data) and whether time is a predator or a companion on the journey of life, and the movie did so superbly. Again, I don't understand why everyone seemed to hate this movie because back then and now, I think its awesome.
