Review of Star Trek: Generations (1994) by George K — 24 Sep 2009

Star Trek: Generations (1994) -- [6.5] -- SPOILER REVIEW. The Next Generation's maiden motion picture voyage is a little wobbly, but it mostly works if you're a big enough fan of the series. Of the four features they would make, "Generations" is most like the TV show -- warm, friendly, and fun.

Most of the characters are understandably short shrifted in the time constraints of a single movie, but Picard and Data have some nice moments. Data's newfound emotions make for a running gag throughout the movie.

While I like his "life forms" song, the joke wears thin after a while. The central plot device, a time nexus/energy ribbon thingy, is too silly for my taste, and the climax involving the death of Captain Kirk is surprisingly forgettable.

But I like the subplot involving Picard's nephew and the spectacular crash landing of the Enterprise's saucer section.
