Review of Star Trek: First Contact (1996) by Christopher L — 22 May 2009
The best of the "Star Trek: Next Generation" inspired movies, this one brings Picard back up against the Borg without taking a crap all over what the Borg were developed to be the Next Generation series. They don't do a lot to develop the Borg, but they also don't turn them into generic bad-guy cyborgs (a la "Voyager").
The focus in this movie is on action and story, which is fine. We get a good development of the relationship between Picard and Data, with overtones to Kirk and Spock from the original series; we some good drama and tension; and Picard is developed very well in this movie.
You could profitably stop watching Star Trek movies with this one, and that includes JJ Abrams' "reboot" shit-fest that would be bad whether it was Star Trek or Space Wars or whatever.
