Review of Star Trek: First Contact (1996) by Aaron R — 08 Jun 2011
The movie is a beautiful use of a screenwriting tool called the ghost, essentially the demons of the past haunting the present. The real conflict here is Picard's humanity versus his lust for revenge.
The more he succumbs, the more senseless and destructive he grows. Picard never did truly heal from being assimilated, and this is where that's dealt with. The direct Borg threat against Earth rips open old wounds and forces him to either heal or watch everything he cares about be destroyed.
