For a movie with "beyond" in the title, STB plays it surprisingly safe. The plot is generic, the MacGuffin is generic, the villain is generic, and even the twist-that-isn't-shocking-at-all is generic.

Star Trek purists will be disappointed that the series has been sapped of the quintessential exploration, science, and theology that made the original series so popular, but for the rest us, the two hours of grandiose effects and humor is more than enough to keep us occupied.
