Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Rafael M — 28 Sep 2016
Not terrible action adventure film, passable 1.5 hours but nothing really interesting or new here at all. Enterprise destroyed early on, it seems no one knows how to write the ship into the narrative any more at all. It just happens in every movie now, doesn't it? You can just hear the dialog at the writing meetings - "OK, how do we get rid of the Enterprise so we can do the story?".
Villain crudely drawn and , uttering the most insipid banalities in an artificial bass voice does not make words scary or meaningful. The villain is the worst part of the film by far, and similar to a Marvel/DC villain in shallowness and incomprehensible / childish motivation - nearly to a comical degree but not quite enough. Core cast was OK, dialog was tolerable. Plot threads were pretty hokey, especially a romance between Uhura and Spock. Probably the least sci-fi ST to date, there just isn't any scifi here whatsoever.
