Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Lewis E — 18 Oct 2016
84%? Really? This film was quite the step down from the last two Star Trek reboots, using tired tropes, uneven pacing, and having too much focus on long action sequences. The comic relief felt a bit forced and didn't exactly make up for lack of emotional weight.
Idris Elba was sorely underused; they could have hired anyone to play his role, that of a flat, one-note villain with nonsensical motives. Star Trek: Beyond is visually entertaining, yes, but it's nothing more than an action popcorn flick.
I was left sitting in the theater thinking, "what? That was it?".
