Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Justin E — 22 Oct 2016
I wish I would have looked at who the director was before I went to see this movie. I am a trekie. Not an extreme one. I've never dressed up or went to any conventions, but I have seen every episode of every show (usually several times) and every movie.
As you might expect from the man who directed the fast and the furious movies, this movie is purely about action. There is almost zero story telling. It's as close as you could get to the fast and the furious in space.
It didn't even look good. Practically every single scene opened with an overhead revolving camera shot. We get it. You think it's fun to start every scene that way. Action sequences were way over the top and not remotely natural or believable.
I think Star Trek is dead. I suppose the new show could revitalize what made Star Trek great, but I don't see it happening in movie form and certainly not with this pure action director. It made me sad to watch this.
I thought since they had developed the characters a bit in the first two reboot movies this one might be better but it was far worse.
