Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Beecee — 07 Aug 2016
This movie reverts to the old odd numbered/ even numbered theory of Star Trek films. As the 13th film, it is definitely not as good as the J.J. Abrams' first two reboots. Yes, the CGI is terrific, and the scenery of Dubai provides an effective futuristic backdrop.
There is an interesting female alien in this story, and the main Star Trek cast is a pleasure to see. Yet the plot doesn't really hold water. This seems more like a generic action movie, rather than a real Star Trek film.
The best of Star Trek provided good characters with even the villains having realistic motivation, and maybe even a moral to the story. In this film, the rationale for the Enterprise to rescue the crew of the damsel in distress doesn't seem right.
The motivation for the lead villain isn't revealed until the last 1/4 of the film, when it seems like too little too late.
