Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Sam G — 07 Mar 2017
This is what the reboot should have been, and unfortunately has taken this long to arrive.
It is respectful to the Star Trek lore, whilst at the same time forging ahead with a new story and new characters and settings. A nostalgia trek for fans and a great introduction to newcomers, not that heavy handed with references, but nothing to alienating for newcomers.
Mostly the performances are good, and most of the cast get an opportunity to shine. The villain is somewhat lacking and wasted, and if you have seen the tv spots spoils the whole plot. There is some wasted time on things that do not add anything to the film, where other things that needed the time are overlooked in favour of other elements.
It has taken a few years and two films to get here, but it looks like Star Trek is back on track.
