Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by A. M — 26 Aug 2016
In Johannesburg, in the late 60's and early 70's, in the dark Verwoerdian days before TV was allowed my parents would rent movies to play on a Bell & Howell 16mm projector. The movie came with a free "TV Short" and when this was a Star Trek episode it was always a highlight.
"Stark Trek Beyond" intentionally recreates the feel of those TV episodes and hardly strikes a bad note. Even some of the fake rocks are intentionally fake-looking and the phaser guns are exactly the way they were.
The movie starts with alcohol (some sort of alien moonshine) and Kirk proceeds to the bridge presumably drunk and the movie also ends with alcohol - I suppose that also part of the retro feel. I loved every minute of this movie and immediately believed in the recreated characters and fell in love with the alien female.
Definitely 2 thumbs up!
