Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Tim C — 25 Dec 2016
So here's my resume:
I loved the original series, Next Generation, Voyager, Original movies except for number 5, all Next Gen movies, and the first Star Trek with young Kirk in 2009.
Into Darkness - I thought was just okay.
This movie (beyond) was really beyond saving in my opinion. They've reduced Star Trek to a big budget, no real plot, action movie.
I say no plot, but really I mean no "thinking" plot. Things happen, sure, but all strategy, all problem solving, all thinking by any of the characters happens within minimal seconds with funny quips to escape the fact that absolutely no thought went into it at all. There is no suspense. For me, there was no interest. My resounding thought was - whatever, okay, let's just move on. How long is this again?
I don't fault the actors. I've seen that they are good. I fault the writing and maybe the directing. Mostly writing. It's just not a good story. It has no intelligent meat.
It just isn't Star Trek.
Make a Star Trek movie, and I'll probably like it.
