Review of Star Trek Beyond (2016) by Rob V — 07 Sep 2016
I have been a huge fan of the series up to this point but felt this movie was a huge let down. This movie felt like a regurgitated formula that was overly predictable and Chris Pine looked to be going through the motions with this performance.
Much of this is colored by the disposition they gave him at the beginning of the movie. The character development for the villains of this story was paper thin. The story did not have significant depth, and indulged itself in predictable cheap comedic moment and deus ex machina.
Movie Trilogies that really knock it out of the park in the first few movies unfortunately have a heavy task of living up to the hype of former releases and I feel Star Trek like many others failed to do this.
On it's own it would have been a decent movie, but it doesn't stand up to the others in the trilogy by a long shot in my opinion. I have loved this reboot and hope they explore this universe more, but they are going to have to really come up with some intriguing story telling and great acting to keep me interested.
2 out of 5 stars.
