Review of Star Trek (2009) by Victoria G — 08 Nov 2013
This movie can pack a punch. Star Trek feels fresh and new and different enough from other space movies that it doesn't feel repetitive or unorginal. JJ Abrams has masterfully directed the cast, who give solid performances.
He has made each scene feel vivid and immersive, and the visuals are beautiful and feel creative and unique. The use of lens flares, though does take alot away from the action sequences, making them feel rushed and without any depth or thrill.
The story is strong and complex but certain aspects of the film feel undeveloped such as the Villain. While there is some threat from Nero and his intentions are clear, there is only little known about him and there is a lack of character development with him.
This is also the case with the relationship between Spock and Uhura which is only ever glanced upon. Zoe Saldana portrays Uhura well, but the lack of complexity in the character is a definite down point for the film.
Star Trek boasts a complex story, amazing visuals and immersive direction. But it still misses depth in some aspects of character and relationships. But it is still a very pleasing film and proves to be a strong contender in the space film arena.
