Review of Star Trek (2009) by Akiko A — 18 May 2015
J.J. Abrams resurrected "Star Trek" for modern audiences taking "Star Trek" where it has never gone before. Thanks to some changes in the time line, the future of the franchise can explore new compelling stories.
In 2233 we are on board the Kelvin where a Romulan ship has traveled into the past & attacks the Kelvin. Captain Robau boards the Romulan vessel to negotiate peace but their Captain Nero begins asking questions about Ambassador Spock, who Robau has never heard of.
Nero kills Robau continuing to attack the Kelvin. George Kirk takes over command of the Kelvin & evacuates the ship including his pregnant wife Winona who gives birth to James T. Kirk. Nero's presence in the past changes the timeline forever of the Star Trek Universe.
James T. Kirk has a troubled childhood with a step father. Spock is accepted in the Vulcan Science Academy but goes to Starfleet Academy instead due to prejudice against his human mother. Kirk gets in a bar fight that leads to meeting Christopher Pike who convinces him to join Starfleet.
Kirk meets Leonard McCoy on the transport to the academy & become fast friends. In this new scenario of Star Trek Uhura and Spock are romantically involved. J.J. Abrams gives us a new fresh look at the characters who would travel on The Enterprise while taking us on adventure we all remember all too well with an upgrade.
This is one of the best Star Trek movies, if not the best.
