Review of Star Trek (2009) by Tony F — 14 Jun 2015
The effects are stunning, and the beginnings of Captain James T. Kirk, Dr. Leonard McCoy, and Spock and their intertwined lives are portrayed in an interesting way. However, Abrams taking it upon himself to remake an established United Federation of Planets by doing away with one of its key planets leaves me thinking that Abrams thinks too much of himself and/or not much of Star Trek fans.
A Federation sans the planet Vulcan is an offense to fans who watched Star Trek since the original series in the mid-60s. It wasn't really necessary to change Star Trek ' s universe. The three stars are for a fantastic performance by Karl Urban as McCoy, for a believable young James Kirk, and for a great depiction of Spock and his upbringing as half Vulcan.
For screwing around with the established structure of the Federation the movie loses two stars. It shouldn't have been done this way. And Spock having a romance with Uhura? Please.
