Review of Star Trek (2009) by Erick M — 11 Oct 2017
This movie misses the mark on what Star Trek is by a hundred light years. It has action, but it's not Star Trek. It has one-liners, which isn't Star Trek. It has characters with similar names, but none of the charm or content of the original Star Trek. It substitutes meaning and personalities with "destiny" and super-human genius for each character. Finally, it has one of the most generic, idiotic, and uninteresting villain in cinema. The writing is lazy, and assigns "emotional trauma" as the motive to every character's action. In this universe, there are no enemies resulting from conflicting philosophical and political beliefs - only the randomness of emotional trauma.
I am deeply disappointed to see how widely praised this movie is. As a Star Trek film, it is an abomination. As an action film, it is underwhelming. As a sci-fi film, it is lackluster and generic.
In short, captain, this film... is without honor.
