Review of Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures (2001) by Roland K — 13 Jan 2011
12.1.2011.
A celebration of one of the greatest film-makers. It's a good introduction to his life and works. We see footage from home-movies and a lot of talking heads, including family members and other film-makers. Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Jack Nicholson, among others, turn up to praise Kubrick. They're all clearly excited about him and his work. However, it is more a story of history than a critical analysis and so it would work better as a DVD bonus feature rather than as an independent documentary. I like this film very much, but only because Kubrick's work has had such a huge and personal impact on me.
