Review of Standard Operating Procedure (2008) by Joshua T — 28 Nov 2008
Despite the flashy graphic work and the Elfman score, this is not as cinematic as Morris' other films. While Morris is trying to arrive at a true account, as in all of his work, this is a procedurally paced film.
That Morris gets such honest interviews from these infamous characters who we've only seen before in photos is impressive. But Morris' works best when he uses an individual catalyst to explore a larger system.
He does not do that here, focusing instead on a collective bound by a frame of mind, and it lacks the emotional connection and engaging immediacy of his best films.
