Review of Stand Up Guys (2012) by Joel B — 02 Feb 2013
This movie suffers from nuance, subtlety, complexity and depth unattainable by youngsters comatose in their digital ear bud bubbles. They should stay away and not write reviews or rate it, and keep their focus on vapid vacuous vampires.
This story is about real life.
Mature humans will see how the characters move smartly through delight, twists and turns, with hints dropped, then answered later with poignant satisfaction.
Revel in the stark contrast between the decaying Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin and the perky women they encounter and, in one case, rescue.
Applaud the direction as one young woman wistfully raises her hand to say, "I'll call you" and the audience roars.
Listen to the rumble of the muscle car, a sound you haven't heard off the race track since the 60s., as it echoes the throbbing hearts of the old men.
Ponder two aging criminals breaking into a drugstore to steal prescription drugs because the co-pay is so high (look it up, children).
It's about old men and aging, honor, familial love and death with dignity, which young viewers cannot appreciate, hence the less than stellar recommendations. The audience I was in, Marin County CA, mostly gray haired, applauded and roared and groaned with appreciation. If ratings were age ranked, this movie would score top tomato.
