Review of Stand Up Guys (2012) by Keith H — 03 Feb 2013
It's terribly disappointing to watch a movie with grandpa Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin and turning out to be a total mediocrity. Just like most things in life, it's almost better if they are terrible than inconsequential.
I drove my ass to see this movie after the Super Bowl expecting somewhat of a light comedy. Well, it's not funny or perhaps it's just too dull to actually make you laugh. It's been a long time since I saw such poor acting from good actors and so many abused cliches and stereotypes. The movie is so lazy it doesn't even try to get out of the recycled bin of overused characters.
There is really nothing that makes this movie stand out in any way. In a couple of weeks I will probably have forgotten about it completely. Oftentimes I rent movies I have already seen months later for a plane ride. Not this one. I don't think it warrants more of my life than I already gave it.
The only reason it's not worse is that it actually has a plot, and not a terrible one. If the filmmakers had made the slightest effort this could have been a moderately decent movie.
Pointless and irrelevant from every possible angle.
