Immaculately written, performed and executed, Rob Reiner's all-boys' adventure captures the very essence of childhood itself; exploring boyhood bravado and its underlying anxieties in depth without skimping on the family feel-good factor.
The characters play off of one another perfectly and Reiner finds a unique, intricate balance between style-heavy entertainment film and compelling study of character and companionship. Stand By Me reaches out to the twelve year-old in all of us, yet never fails to entertain and amuse, offering a truly reflective, reverent viewing experience throughout for anyone who has ever felt young. Simple but effective filmmaking at its finest.
