Review of Stand by Me (1986) by Xgary X — 07 Nov 2010
A great movie based on one of Stephen King's better (non-supernatural) stories. It's effective in its simplicity. The actors are totally convincing (look for a bad boy young Kiefer Sutherland) and effective in their roles as childhood buddies in that tenuous period between being a teenager and a kid.
The script is fantastic --with perhaps a touch too much cursing from the young 'uns-- but there are never any lines that are written or delivered in a way that rings false. The addition of Richard Dreyfuss can be seen as annoying for some (didn't bother me) but I liked his examination of how some people flit in and out of your life and some stay in for a long time.
This makes the retrospection at the end seem not perfunctory but understandable based on that rationale. This movie beautifully tells us that life is not about the destination but the memory of the journey.
