Review of Stand and Deliver (1988) by Greg T — 22 Jul 2011
Admiral Adama teaches his class of Mexican-American students how to do calculus & think about their futures in a fun but entirely predictable classroom drama that's based on a true story. The bad-boys in this supposedly tough East LA school confine their hijinks to wearing sunglasses inside & occasionally pushing one another, & the big brains are easily spotted by their equally big glasses.
Subtlety is certainly not part of the curiculum, though while Olmos's Oscar-nominated performance as the teacher is showy & occasionally irritating, he carries the character with skill and certainly makes him, and his peculiar attitude, really rather memorable.
Still, if you've seen the South Park spoof involving Mr Cartmenez, you'll never be able to watch this without thinking of it. A wonderful parody.
