Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Tim C — 03 Oct 2009
The first of the WWII POW dramas, and what a drama! William Holden earns his Oscar with his concrete depiction of a cynical POW who barters and trades to survive in a camp. Otto Preminger plays a rare acting as a Nazi commandant with a fixation with power, which, if you know anything about Preminger, wasn't far from his own personality! There are periods of light humor and you will find yourself laughing at things you might think you shouldn't at.
The humor adds a little whimsy to a dark story of imprisoned isolation and accusation. Billy Wilder, of Some Like It Hot and Sunset Boulevard directed this masterpiece.
