This is truly one of the greatest films. Stalag 17 has it all: great acting, a funny script, and the perfect mix of comedy and thriller genres. William Holden won a Best Actor Oscar for this film and completely deserved it.
Billy Wilder is one of the most versatile filmmakers that has ever lived and with this film, he infuses political commentary with a gripping story and unique and three-dimensional characters. If you have already seen Sunset Boulevard, this is absolutely the next Wilder film you need to see.
