Review of Stake Land (2010) by Duncan S — 21 Jun 2011
When most horror films these days seem to think the addidtion of tounge in cheek humour is a neccessity, its refreshing to see a horror film that takes itself very seriously indeed. After the world is overrun by vampire/zombie/cannibal mutants a small group of survivors travel cross country to reach a safe zone in North America.
The focus here is on the survivors rather than the monsters, and the developing relationships are handled with skill and subtlety. There are monster attacks but they are secondary to the main characters journey to find safety, and their battle for survival.
Some may complain that it lacks any humour at all, but its the serious tone (not unlike The Road) that makes this stand head and shoulders above the competition.
