Review of Stake Land (2010) by Allen R — 02 Aug 2011
Ah, a vampire movie for people who don't like vampire movies, where they're treated as monsters and not tragically romantic figures shimmering away as they pine for their leading ladies (or get wrapped up in all that "My Liege" nonsense.
They're monsters and we're food, and director Jim Mickle plays it straight milking moments that are often at once gripping, tense, and emotional. Mixing genre sensibilities with an arthouse vibe, this is definitely one of the better independent horror films in recent years.
