Review of Stake Land (2010) by James C — 22 Oct 2011
This is a road movie with vamps that are not the pretty variety but the ugly scary type. Kelly McGillis shines as a the nun they meet along the way and her story is rather poignant. Unfortunately, for a film focused so much on characterisation the two leads never really engage emotionally and the film features an irritating and wholly unnecessary narration.
I swear, I wished I could turn it off in the settings. You know the kind of cliched drivel: before the world went to hell, seems nothing was left and even hope was gone, that kinda thing. Maybe Ive just seen too many post-apocalypse movies.
The film has some nice new ideas i.e vampire fangs are used as currency and a twisted religious sect features heavily although they come across more as stagey bad-guys than believable antagonists. The vamps could have done with more involvement.
A worthy watch and a cut above the average but fairly forgettable really.
