Review of Stake Land (2010) by Eduardo R — 26 Dec 2011
I was very happy that this turned out to be a really good horror flick that I had never heard of. I like horror movies but I have to say that most of them absolutely suck, at least in my estimation. Generally I could care less about the actors; actually the young smug superficial types that people most horror movies make me want to see them gutted.
I also find that most horror is gross and crass and perverted with no particular reason or plot or characterization just gross for grossness' sake. This movie has likable characters, an okay plot that is simple but effective and a generous dose of humanity! To find that in a b-list horror movie is like hitting the lotto, well maybe not quite, but it is unusual.
It is also in the recently ever popular post-apocalyptic genre and I like that kind of thing. So if you like that genre plus a cross between vampires and zombies and people who have hearts vs. religious fanatic evil cults then this is likely a good choice for you too!
