Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Jason L — 04 Aug 2008
Justifiably a classic, even if it lacks the punch it had in 1939. The stagecoach chase sequence remains a magnificent piece of cinema and Wayne's breakthrough performance is wonderful to watch.
Ford's sweeping vistas are spectacular to look at and he injects the film with a sense of brilliance which still lasts to this day.
The "social prejudice" theme is worn and predictable now, but this doesn't stop this film from being both admirable and enjoyable. Thomas Mitchell's performance as the drunk doctor is also a joy, as are many of the lines of dialogue.
Recommended - this is high quality, classic filmmaking.
