Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Brian B — 03 Aug 2009
After the financial failure of "The Big Trail" John Wayne was reduced to starring in B Westerns for Poverty Row studios for the next nine years before John Ford cast him in this A picture. Wayne even receives second billing behind the more bankable Claire Trevor.
But Ford seems determined to make a star out of Wayne The first time Wayne appears Ford has his camera swoop into close up as the Duke spins his rifle, a now iconic image and one of the best character introductions in film history.
