Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Scott W — 12 Apr 2010
John Ford's landmark Western road trip with an eclectic group of travellers crossing New Mexico during an Apache uprising is one of cinema's classics. The scenery is the usual Monument Valley seen in many of Ford's movies and is beautifully shot.
The cast are simply marvellous, giving natural, character driven performances. Thomas Mitchell won an Oscar for Best Supporting actor for his wonderful performance as Doc Boone, but his is just one of many great performances.
Claire Trevor and John Wayne have great chemistry and John Carradine is good as a sinister gambler. Andy Devine's distinctive voice provides much of the comedy. Exciting, engrossing, heart warming stuff!!
