Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Michael A — 08 May 2010
The ground STAGECOACH broke for its genre cannot be overstated. every western you love - whether it was produced in america or europe, in the 50s or the 90s - owes some debt, be it small or great, to john ford's first sound western.
proper contextualisation is absolutely necessary in order to appreciate this film's place in history, however, and I really only rate it so highly because of the seeds it sowed...STAGECOACH may seem a bare, slow movie to those that have grown up enjoying more robust and fully-realised genre entries.
