Review of Stagecoach (1939) by Erin W — 11 Jan 2011
Watching John Ford craft memorable and defining Americana is always a joy, but seeing the moment where John Wayne gets announced to the world as an American and cinematic icon is truly something to behold.
STAGECOACH is remarkable in how impeccably timed, framed, and paced the movie is, there is a reason Orson Welles watched it over forty times while shooting CITIZEN KANE. Movies that pull an entire genre from the B-list to the realm of A-list Hollywood productions are rare, and movies that cement unimpeachable icons like John Wayne are so few and far between that STAGECOACH becomes more than a seminal and essential film for lovers of westerns and Americana in general.
