Review of Stage Fright (2014) by Dan H — 05 Aug 2014
I'm surprised to say I actually loved this film, maybe it's because I was raised in musical theater. This film is realistic with it's approach towards musical theater, and it's clear that it does like musical theater but that doesn't stop this from mocking the trappings of musicals and those nerdy enough to perform in them.
The real standouts here are Allie MacDonald as Camilla (our heroine), Meat Loaf as Roger (the head of the musical theater camp), Douglas Smith as Buddy (Camilla's brother), Ephraim Ellis as Sam (one of the attendees who is struggling with is he or isn't he gay), Kent Nolan as Joel (The resident techie who has a crush on Camilla), and Brandon Uranowitz as Artie (the womanizing director of the musical).
Surprisngly the best character here is the killer, who is an angry, screaming metal head. While the deaths don't really start piling on until the last thirty minutes or so of the film, when they do the deaths are pretty great.
Oh, did I mention this film itself is a musical too? Yeah, all in all Stage Fright is a fun and tasty treat....especially for those who have ever been to theater camp.
