Review of Stage Fright (1950) by Stephen C — 27 Dec 2011
Made in 1950 just before the ace Strangers on A train this brit based Hitch film seems to have become lost among the directors later work.
Starting with the false flashback (I wonder if Brian De Palma has studied this film).
Hitchcock weaves a cunning tale of lies and truth and of course some wonderful scenes ,most notably the Garden party and the final act in the theatre.
Many including some say Hitchcock himself were unsatisfied with the final result and while some of the acting is atouch ropey, and perhaps the film meanders in some places, you get a wondeful Alistair Sim peformance and a lovely cameo from Joyce Grenfell.
A solid Hitchcock film and one that deserves to be more widely known.
