Review of Stage Beauty (2004) by Amber G — 14 Sep 2007
A fantastic idea about a fascinating period. If only it weren't so sloppy around the edges. Characters unroll so quickly that they have very little time to develop our understanding or sympathy (though Danes and Crudup achieve both admirably), the moral of the message teeters dangerously close to preachiness (though it never succumbs), and the occasional over-the-top acting threatens to sink the otherwise believable period concept.
Not to mention the presence of psychological realism in the final "Othello" scene -- a move which would have garnered condemnation instead of praise. All in all, a great movie, if it didn't take so seriously at times.
