Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Dann M — 11 Jan 2015
An entertaining, yet formulaic dark comedy, St. Vincent delivers some fun laughs. The story follows a curmudgeonly old man who's hard up for cash and offers to babysit for his new next door neighbor, and before long he starts to take the kid under his wing and teaches him some street smarts.
Starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy, Naomi Watts, and introducing Jaeden Lieberher, that casting is quite good. Murray is in top form and has great chemistry with Lieberher (who's alright for a child actor).
Still, the film plays on a lot of stereotypes, and the plot's extremely predictable. But as flawed as it is, St. Vincent is a touching film about finding the good in the most unlikely of places.
