Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Kevin P — 05 Apr 2015
Hey Bill Murray's starring in a good movie again! All jokes aside, it really is relieving to see not only the return of the spot-on humor from arguably one of the funniest comedians of all time, but also get to see a very realistic and dramatic portrayal from the same guy as well.
You feel like you get to see a chunk of hs life, from what his routine day is like to his heartwarmingly genuine yet poignant reasons for his gruff shell. The kid he befriends is likable enough, and Melissa McCarthy finally breaks off for once from her usual be-loud-and-rowdy shtick as a genuinely caring mother (though to be fair I personally though she was just as qualified as Vincent to earn the [obvious but nevertheless spoiler].
While Vncent's relationship with the kid does go in the direction you'd expect, it is done rather effectively with a mostly good balance of subtle humor and effective somber and uplifting moments.
Even the obviously-not Russian accented Naomi Watts character gave a few laughs in. Overall, it's a good sweet-and-sour flick and definitely the best Bill Murray movie in a long time.
