Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Andrew C — 13 Nov 2015
Four out of Five Stars. It should be bad news for this film (marketed as a quirky comedy) that it isn't really very funny, except that opens the door for a stream of excellent and subtle serendipities.
Outstanding casting and acting almost exclusively against 'type' (Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy each deliver their BEST performances despite being not traditionally comedic), surprising and witty writing creating especially vivid characters, and a story that is powerful especially *because* of its simplicity (i.
E. boys need fathers), each are components that over-achieve in their categories. A fantastic and real story. 11/13/15.
