Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Barbara L — 27 Mar 2015
St. Vincent is a great movie that is quite a bit of a return for Bill Murray in comedic form. The acting is terrific, especially Bill Murray. Melissa McCarthy is really good in taking a serious role while still having some funny moments for her.
Jaeden Lieberher is great in it and it's cool that we kept getting talented kid actors. Naomi Watts took me out of it first with her Russian accent as I never thought she'll do that, but it sounds authentic and her accent is growing on me.
It does go to the drama route which is effective, although it can get very sentimental at times. There's some moments that had been done before, but stuff like the bully part gets resolved very quickly which is really cool.
The chemistry between Vincent and Oliver is really good and can be a bit heartfelt too. It humanizes Vincent and it never made him mean spirited. St. Vincent is a great time for Bill Murray fans and it shows that Melissa McCarthy can act and be funny when it's not about her weight.
