Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Kristi M — 15 Apr 2015
The biggest criticism I have seen about this movie is that the plot is one you have heard before. It is. This story is nothing new that can be said have either been done better or worse before. This one is special though.
One, it is a more dramatic role for Bill Murray which lets Murray be Murray while showing the emotional range of both himself and the character. Not to be outdone, fine work is given also to Melissa McCarthy who not only plays off of Murray but exceeds in a more down to earth role than most of the roles she is known for.
Naomi Watts is probably the most surprising here. While her accent throughout the movie can be questionable, she does have fun playing a role against those she is more famously known for. Not forgetting, young Lieberher showing a natural light by Murray side and bringing together what this movie is about, seeing the good in someone when you have no physical evidence of there being any good.
