Review of St. Vincent (2014) by Maureen P — 24 Jul 2015
Haven't cried at a movie since can't remember when, but St. Vincent had me misty-eyed early one and sniffling 1/2 way into the film, with warm salty tears rolling down my cheeks by the end. The critics warned that the movie gets dangerously close to sentimental territory; that seems to be just what I was looking for tonight.
Great cinema, no. Thoroughly satisfying date-night movie, yes. Great music, great performances and one helluva plucky kid, Oliver/ Naomi Watts shines as the "lady of the night," Melissa McCarthy is unusually measured in her performance as Oliver's mother, Bill Murray is convincing in an improbably role, and Jaeden Lieberher owns this movie as 12-year old Oliver.
